ADVISORY & PROGRAM COMMITTEE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

New Mexico Jurisdiction Missions Department Advisory & Programs Committee Board of Directors

An effective advisory board is critical to the success of the Missions Department programs. Having an independent body of missions workers, parents and others interested community members can be key to building a secure, ongoing missions program.

The advisory board plays an important public relations role, as well as, providing program staff with fresh perspective on programmatic issues such as church growth, community growth, overseas travel, child neglect and or dysfunctional adolescence. In calculation, working with an advisory board may increase the Missions Departments’ potential to broaden its funding through outside contacts that would be beneficial for departmental growth.

Each advisory board member brings something unique to the overall missions department vision. Some members will take responsibility for specific tasks. Other members will not be able to accept specific responsibilities, but will attend meetings and provide important input.  Some board members may not be able to attend scheduled meetings, yet their support, even if in name only, may be important because it lends to trustworthiness to the missions department program.

Advisory Board Responsibility

An advisory board does not have any official authority; therefore all of their responsibilities are assigned at the discretion of the executive director and/or board of directors. Responsibilities assigned to an advisory board may include any or all of the following.

Program Creation and Planning. It can be beneficial to create an advisory board during the beginning stages of developing a program so that the board can provide sound advice concerning the design and layout for each designated program. It is easier to begin with a small advisory board, for example, four to ten within youth leaders/ city workers/ public centers/ schools teacher/ law enforcment programs, and community members such as parents, during the planning process.

Development of Program Policy. While advisory boards cannot create legally binding policies for the Jurisdictional Missions Department, they can help create policies which provide direction and support for the program staff.

Planning and Implementing Public Relations. An advisory board which includes faithful YPWW youth workers and parent advocates can be effective at spreading the word about specific and all programs services.

Supporting Missions Co President/ Public Relations and Program Committee. Often advisory boards are created specifically to raise program funds. The advisory board must be granted authority by the executive directory to do so.

Other Task. The advisory board can be created to address a specific organizational need. Also, the advisory board also helps the Missions Co Presidents/ Public Relations and Programs Committee with special task concerning any designated programs such as Missions Department Meetings/ Fundraisers/ Rallies etc.
